- Academic Excellence requirement
• In the USA there are over 18,000 High School. Each school has several straight A students, and many of these students are involved in extracurricular activities that demonstrate their leadership skills (Club Presidents, Class Presidents, Sports Captains, etc). A large majority of these students will apply to Ivy League Schools. Due to the competitive nature of College admissions, it is essential that students get a head start in planning and setting reachable goals for their college admissions.
As you can see, the top Ivy League schools only accept between 7%-18% of their applicant pool. Therefore top Colleges are looking for ambitious students who are outgoing and are succeeding both inside and outside of the classroom. It is very important for students to demonstrate their success outside of the classroom, to set themselves apart from other applicants with high grades.
Colleges are looking for Applicants:
• With high GPA’s (for Ivy League schools students will need close to straight A’s)
• High Test Scores (SAT and TOEFL)
• AP courses/College level Courses
• Honors Courses
• Impressive list of Extracurricular activities, Clubs and Sports
• Demonstrated Leadership Roles (Being a Club President, Student Body President, Student Ambassador, Peer Mentor, etc)
• Volunteer activities/Community Service in the local community
• Involvement in School Community
• Strong Letters of Recommendation (its great if an alumni teacher can provide a letter of recommendations). College’s love to see letters of recommendation from Alumni
• Strong College Essay. A strong Essay needs to be concrete, precise and express the students interests, desires, and academic goals.
• Clearly defined Academic Interests. It really looks good when a college applicant has done research on the professors they want to work with based on the professors area’s of expertise and research. It demonstrates the applicant has a clear vision for their future and has done the due diligence in researching University Faculty expertise and research backgrounds
